Cash Gifts
Outright gifts of cash or their equivalent enable you to claim an income tax deduction for the full value of your gift. See top of page for more info.

Food
Donations of non-perishable food items are always welcome. Most needed items are: meals in a can (stew, chili, soup), tuna/canned meat, peanut butter, canned foods with pop-top lids, low sugar cereals, 100% fruit juices in single serving boxes, canned fruit packed in its own juice, and low salt canned vegetables. Please do not donate items packaged in glass or bulk quantities of rice, flour, or sugar.

Donations are taken at both our Santa Clara County and San Mateo County Distribution Sites. Click here for addresses, directions and dock (or warehouse) hours.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts
Your memorial gift to the Food Bank can help perpetuate the values and ideals that guided someone’s life. We will send a card to the family or loved one of the person you memorialized notifying them of your gift. When making your gift, please let us know the name and address of the person whom should receive the card.

Gifts may also honor a person during his or her life or commemorate a significant event like a birthday, wedding, or holiday. For gifts of $10 or more, we will send an elegant card to the honoree notifying them of your gift. For gifts below $10, we are happy to send an electronic card via email. When making your gift, please designate the street or email address of the person whom should receive the card.

Give Stock – Avoid Taxes
Donations of publicly traded securities are exempt from the 20% capital gains tax that would be imposed if you sold the securities and made a cash donation. We make the donation process simple for you. Please follow these three steps:

  1. Download and complete this stock gift form
  2. Give a copy of the stock gift form to your broker.
  3. To receive a tax receipt, fax a copy of the stock gift form to Second Harvest at (408) 266-9042.

Please contact Tami Cardenas at (408) 694-0025 or email with any questions.

Gifts of Real Estate
A gift of real estate is often a desirable way to make a major gift as it entitles you to an income tax deduction for the full appraised fair market value, and in most cases you will not have to pay capital gains tax.

Gifts by Will
A bequest of cash, securities or real property to the Food Bank entitles you to a charitable deduction that can be used to reduce the size of the taxable estate and thus reduce or eliminate estate tax liability. There are several types of bequests from which your attorney or financial advisor can help you select. Most importantly, you can perpetrate your support of those in need.

Ways to Give

Life Income Gifts
You may also give assets to Second Harvest Food Bank and retain the right for a designated beneficiary or beneficiaries, including you, to receive income for life from the donated assets. After the death of the income beneficiary or beneficiaries, the gift is used by Second Harvest Food Bank for the purpose designated by you. Life income gifts are a family of highly tax-efficient gift vehicles including unitrusts, annuity trusts, and charitable gift annuities. When properly drawn, life income gift arrangements can provide substantial income and estate tax benefits. They can increase in income if the gift is to a trust or charitable gift annuity that produces a higher cash yield than the assets donated. They reduce the size of the estate subject to probate and relieve you or other beneficiaries from some of the burden of estate investment and management. Second Harvest Food Bank also welcomes contributions that may include gifts-in-kind, life insurance, and payroll deductions, among other gifts.

Ways to Give

As with any major gifts, it is advisable to consult your attorney, accountant, or other advisor regarding tax advantages of such gifts.
